Types of Headphones: Not all are created equal

The humble headphone has been given a great facelift in its design and technology since the 1980s and 90s.

There are so many types on the market now, each designed for a specific use. Some are very affordable and give the elite models a real run for its money, while some upmarket models prove that money does buy excellent sound.

No matter what your budget is, the first things you must know are the types of headphones available, and which one suits you best:

  • In-ear headphones – also known as earphones, these made a comeback when iPods came out.
  • Portable headphones – also known as over-the-ear headphones, these came with the Walkman.
  • Full-size headphones – these cover the entire ear, and come in either closed or open back design, depending on whether you want noise-canceling features or not.

You need to know what to look out for when buying headphones. Once you’ve sorted out what design suits your needs, you need to consider other details for your listening needs.

The Best Headphone – Headphone Reviews

  • Best Buy Headphones – High-end quality at a mid-range price, I was very impressed with the ATHANC7’s performance. These were comparable to a very well-known upmarket brand, but at a much more affordable price. Definitely one of the best price headphones around.
  • Best Headphones for Gaming – Excellent sound delivery that brings games to life, these come with a decent microphone for convenience. Best of all, it’s under $100.
  • Best Portable Headphones – Released in 1984, the PortaPro has a cult following thanks to its retro design (gotta love the 80s!) and amazing acoustics after all these years. The price is even more spectacular at under $50.
  • Best In-ear Headphones – For serious listeners only, these in-ear headphones feature sound isolation and will reawaken your ears to bass that you never knew existed.
  • Best Wireless Headphones – This set is one of the rare few wireless headphones that rival normal full-size gears and make surround audio incredibly realistic. Excellent for action-packed movies and games.
  • Best Headphones for Jogging – These sport headphones will give your workout a boost. Sennheisers doesn’t disappoint with such affordable, bass-thumping headphones that stay in place during a run.

Healthy Hearing with Headphones

It’s easy to get lost in the moment and turn up the volume without realizing that it’ll hurt your ears in the long run. I’ve been guilty of this myself.

Volume Control – depending on the type of headphones you’ve got on, the lower the volume, the longer the listening time.

Noise-canceling – by drowning out external noise, you can keep volume at a minimum, resulting in safer and longer listening.
